ON BEING BRAVE

Confession. I am a scaredy-cat. For real, I am afraid of everything. Heights, elevators, meeting new people, being underground, outer space, airplanes, freeways, paper cuts, ants… you name it, I’m probably afraid of it (or have been at some point).

But the one thing I’m probably most afraid of? Messing up, looking stupid, and having people laugh at me. There’s probably a good and logical reason for it (insert PSA against bullying here), but I’ve come to realize it’s a completely illogical fear. Not to mention it’s a huge hindrance to my pursuit in becoming a great actor. Luckily I’ve been taking this incredible new acting class that’s been teaching us how great it is to be able to laugh at ourselves (amongst other great and valuable lessons).

So here it is. A public declaration of a previously-private fear in the hope that the first step of the 12 step program might just apply here as well. And a reminder that, as Nelson Mandela once said, “courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

I mean.. according to that logic – and given the considerable amount of fears I have – I might just be the bravest person on the planet!
