The past few days have been “just one of those days”. You know what I’m talking about, don’t you? Those “I don’t feel like it today” days. Those days when the mirror feeds you lies and your bed seems like your only friend and everything in your fridge is just no and… just one of those days.
The thing about those days is they require some responsibility or they’ll quickly turn into “just one of those weeks” or weeks-plus-etc. I was rapidly approaching that week mark when Christine and I agreed to meet up for a quick photo session. Guys I’m not gonna lie, I was at that point when putting on mascara seemed too big a feat, and I almost canceled a half a million times before I finally sat myself down and said: “Just give today a chance.”
There’s a part in “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” (Great Netflix original by the way. Highly recommend. Shout-out to my bud Ki Hong and forever-idol-slash-hopefully-future-bud Tina Fey.) when Kimmy says “you can get through anything as long as you take it ten seconds at a time” and hey, wouldn’t you know it, she’s right. On this particular day, facing the whole grand day at once seemed impossibly big and scary. But by breaking it down into “10 second” size bits, the impossible became possible.
“Just give today a chance” gave me the strength to put in contacts and brush my teeth. Washing up gave me the energy to shower. Showering gave me a boost to put on eyeliner… which gave me the confidence to reach for the mascara. I had a brief setback when it came time to manage my hair, but that was quickly remedied by the decision to simply not do it. Hey, that’s what hats are for. And luckily the hat inspired the whole rest of the outfit – from literal head to literal toe. Before I knew it I was out the door and on my way to meet Christine… and here’s the best part. If you can make all these baby steps to the door, that’s when your friends come in to pull you the rest of the way up. Take it from someone who has spent a lot of time in “those days”… often a little bit of time with people you love (and love you back!) is all you need to get you right back on track. Bonus points if those lovely people are also talented photographers who can make you feel strong and beautiful and remind you that your stupid mirror can sometimes be a really good liar.
So hey. If you’re reading this right now stuck in “one of those days”, might I encourage you to give today a chance? Take it “ten second” bits at a time, and I promise you it will get better. I and your friends will be here to pull you the rest of the way up when you’re ready.
